Amazon Prime membership price in India to be increased by 50 percent ‘very soon’



Amazon Prime is going to be up to 50 percent more expensive in India. As a result of the update, the annual Amazon Prime subscription will be available for Rs. 1,499, up from the current Rs. 999. The changes will also take effect for monthly and quarterly Amazon Prime subscription plans in the country, the company confirmed to Gadgets 360. An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Gadgets 360 that the Prime membership in India is being revised from Rs. 999 to Rs. 1,499 for the annual plan. 329 to Rs. 459 for quarterly plan, and Rs. 129 to Rs. 179 for the monthly plan. The pricing change is planned to be implemented “very soon,” though Amazon hasn’t yet provided an exact date for when customers will start receiving the revised pricing.

Amazon has updated its webpage showing the Prime membership fees. The company has also started notifying customers about the update through its online marketplace, as seen by OnlyTech.

The company on its updated webpage said that apart from regular customers, customers who have joined Amazon Prime under their telecom plan will also see a hike in prices.

On behalf of existing Prime members, Amazon said that users can continue their subscription for the period their subscription plan was at the current price. “However, you can choose to renew your subscription at the new price after the price change,” the company said.

Amazon Prime will also be revised for customers aged between 18-24 in the country, who have been given a discounted subscription price under the Prime Youth offer from May. However, in this case the subscription will be available at an effective price of Rs. 499 per annum, down from the existing Rs. 749. The monthly and quarterly Prime membership fees for young customers have also been effectively reduced to Rs. 64 and Rs. 164 to 89 and Rs. 299, respectively.

Amazon launched its Prime membership in India in 2016. It debuted at a starting price of Rs. 499, although Amazon has revised the annual pricing to Rs. 999 in 2017. The company also came out with its Prime monthly subscription in 2018 to attract more customers.

The latest revision has come out in the middle of the festive season. Earlier this month, Amazon launched its Great Indian Festival sale as a month-long event to offer deals, discounts and offers on various products. Amazon rival Flipkart is also continuously hosting different online sales to generate higher revenue during this festive season in the country.

In the US, Amazon offers its Prime membership for $12.99 (approximately Rs. 1,000) per month or $119 (approximately Rs. 8,900) per year. Prime Video subscription is also available separately for $8.99 (approximately Rs.700) per month.
