Apple’s AirPods (2nd Gen), AirPods Pro and AirPods Max are reportedly getting a new firmware update. The firmware build number is called 4A400 and it brings a new feature to AirPods Pro called Conversation Boost. The feature helps people with mild hearing challenges and aims to make in-person conversations easier without removing the earpiece. The Conversation Boost feature was introduced by Apple at WWDC (Apple Worldwide Developers Conference) this year. In addition to the AirPods lineup, the new firmware update is said to be rolling out for the Beats Solo Pro, Powerbeats 4 and Powerbeats Pro.

MacRumors released the latest firmware version 4A400 for AirPods (2nd Gen), AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. According to the report, the Conversation Boost feature has been introduced in the update of AirPods Pro, which Apple previewed at WWDC earlier this year. Once it’s on, it uses the microphone to increase the amount of face-to-face conversations the user can have. It also has an option to reduce ambient noise.

How to turn on Conversation Boost on AirPods Pro

The Conversation Boost feature requires AirPods Pro to be running firmware 4A400. The latest update should install automatically on AirPods (2nd Gen), AirPods Pro and AirPods Max without any manual intervention. Note, the AirPods Pro needs to be inside the charging case and connected to an iPhone or iPad to install the update. It is recommended to keep the AirPods Pro connected to a power source during the firmware update. Users can go to Settings > General > About > AirPods and check the number next to the firmware version.

Once your AirPods Pro is updated with the latest firmware, Conversation Boost can be turned on by following these steps on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 or iPadOS 15.

  • open to Adjustment app and tap easy use
  • Scroll down and tap audio/visual
  • turn on headphone housing
  • Scroll down and tap transparency mode
  • tap on conversation boost to enable the feature
