Google News launches redesign to mark 20th anniversary; Makes it easy to find local news

Google News has launched a new desktop design to make it easier for users to find local news. The redesign is meant to mark the 20th anniversary of Google News this year. The new desktop design will be customized such that your Briefings, Local News and Top Picks sections will be displayed in separate columns on the same page. The tech giant also announced that it has reopened its news aggregator in Spain, nearly eight years after the service was shut down. A few months ago, Google updated Search and News to tackle the spread of misinformation.

Google explained in a blog post that the desktop redesign “brings top stories, local news, and personal preferences for you to the top of the page”. Users can now use the Filter button to add multiple locations to the Local News section. This will enable them to get news about the cities of their choice.

Users also have the option to customize the themes that appear. You can add, remove, or rearrange themes by clicking the blue Customize button in the top right of your Themes section.

The US tech giant also announced that it has reopened its news aggregator in Spain, nearly eight years after shutting down the service. Google announced in November 2021 that Google News would return to Spain without a date, following the Madrid 2019 EU copyright law ratification that would allow third-party online news platforms to negotiate directly with content providers regarding fees. allows. This means that Google will no longer have to pay any fees to Spain’s entire media industry and can instead negotiate with individual publishers.

This April, Google made updates to Search and News to combat the spread of misinformation. Last year, it tweaked search and added an about this results section to inform users about rapidly evolving stories. This feature is currently available in more than 20 languages. Now, in English searches in the United States, these notices will also provide users with information on how to evaluate online news results. The search giant has also shared tips for users to use online fact-checking tools reliably.
