Mobile World Congress, the telecommunications industry’s biggest annual gathering, will be held in Barcelona until 2030, extending its existing contract by six years, organizers said on Monday.

The event, which attracts over 100,000 people to Barcelona, has been held in Spain’s second largest city since 2006.

The current agreement between the GSMA Association that hosts the Congress and local officials lasted until 2024.

“We are thrilled to announce that the MWC will be in Barcelona until 2030,” GSMA Director-General Matt Granarid said in a statement.

“Barcelona is so attached to the MWC experience, it’s hard for me to think of one and not the other,” he said.

The gathering was one of the first events to be canceled in 2020 as COVID-19 started to hit the world.

A shortened back edition was held in June 2021 instead of February, as is usually the case, with many events taking place online.

The 2022 edition, which returned to its normal format, attracted 61,000 participants, up from 61,000 before the pandemic hit in 2019.
