Motorola Edge 20 Pro first impressions: Ready for the Big League?

Motorola Edge 20 Pro is the third smartphone to join the Edge series in India after the Edge 20 Fusion and Edge 20. As the name suggests, the Edge 20 Pro is positioned at the top of the series, and hence it will compete like the OnePlus 9R. Motorola claims that it has packed in good hardware and is confident that the stock Android experience it offers will help reel buyers. I got my hands on this smartphone, and here is my first impression about it.

Motorola Edge 20 Pro price in India

Motorola Edge 20 Pro is priced at Rs. 36,999 for the configuration alone in India, which has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. You can choose between Midnight Sky and Iridescent Cloud color finishes.

Motorola Edge 20 Pro is like its younger brother Edge 20 when it comes to design and some of its specifications. Let’s take a look at the design first. The new Edge 20 Pro looks premium and features a larger 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a tall 20:9 aspect ratio on the front. The smartphone is narrow and tall, so it’s easy to hold in one hand, but it’s not possible to reach the top of the display with the thumb without shuffling the phone.

This AMOLED display has a full-HD+ resolution as well as a fast refresh rate of 144Hz and a maximum touch sampling rate of 576Hz. If this all sounds familiar, it is because the Motorola Edge 20 has similar display specifications. One difference with the Edge 20 Pro is the use of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and back.

Motorola Edge 20 Pro packs a 4,500mAh battery and has support for 30W fast charging

Motorola says that the Edge 20 Pro’s midframe is made of aluminum alloy with resin coating. This gives it a glossy finish, but it doesn’t feel so premium. Motorola has gone with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner on the right side along with the volume buttons. Competitors like the OnePlus 9R (Review) however boast an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Motorola Edge 20 Pro has a dedicated button for Google Assistant on the left. You won’t find a 3.5mm headphone jack on this device, but the USB Type-C port, loudspeaker and SIM tray are at the bottom while the secondary microphone is at the top.

At the back, you’ll find a triple camera setup that includes a 108-megapixel primary camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera with 5X zoom and optical image stabilization, and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera that can also take macros. . For selfie, this phone has a 32-megapixel selfie camera in the hole punch at the front. This camera module is not as stretched as the Edge 20.

The Edge 20 Pro is thicker than the Edge 20, (though not by much) and one of the reasons could be its larger 4,500mAh battery. Motorola has bundled a 30W TurboPower charger in the box. I had the Midnight Sky unit of the Edge 20 Pro which has a matte finish on the back panel. The Edge 20 Pro is IP52 rated which should keep it splash protected.

Connectivity options on the Motorola Edge 20 Pro include Bluetooth 5.1, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, dual 5G connectivity (with support for 11 5G bands) and 4G VoLTE. It also supports five satellite navigation systems.

The Motorola Edge 20 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 SoC, and packs 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage. While there is only one configuration on sale for the Edge 20 Pro in India, I think there is room in the market for a 12GB RAM, 256GB storage variant.

You get Android 11 on top with Motorola’s MyUX interface. Motorola has promised two years of software updates on the Motorola Edge 20 Pro. My review unit was running the September Android security patch. The Edge 20 Pro’s interface feels like stock Android with a few customizations. Apart from Facebook and a few Google apps, I didn’t find any other bloat pre-installed on this device. The UI is very easy to navigate and Android purists will love it.

After spending some time with the Motorola Edge 20 Pro, I can say that it packs in good hardware for the price. Its clean software is easy to use and overall this smartphone can be a good alternative to OnePlus 9R. Can Motorola Edge 20 Pro beat OnePlus 9R in terms of actual usage, gaming performance, camera quality and battery life? If you’re curious, stay tuned for the full review.
