Overwatch to soon get cross-platform support on consoles, PC

Overwatch developer Blizzard Entertainment is planning to roll out cross-platform play on consoles and PC. The news about the cross-platform play was first confirmed via a Reddit thread. Overwatch was launched in 2016 but does not support cross-platform play or cross-progression on all available platforms. For those who didn’t get started, Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter with an interesting roster of characters each with their own special abilities. An upcoming feature for Overwatch suggests that cross-play could also be included in Overwatch 2 which is due for release soon.

Discussing the Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session in relation to cross-platform play, Overwatch Technical Director John LaFleur said, “Given the additional complexities of cross-progress, it’s probably best to tackle cross-play first and then play the game.” Makes the most sense to track progress. As a potential add-on, if we go down this route.” The update was announced via a video on YouTube as “coming soon”.

Cross-platform, when it comes to Overwatch, will be a welcome feature, but it may not live up to the hype. According to a Reddit thread, Blizzard Entertainment still can’t support cross-progression between multiple copies of the game, which players may have. A player’s collection of skins and XP levels will not be transferable between platforms. However, the upcoming update of the game will help users to engage in online matches with friends or strangers on various platforms.

To play with friends on different platforms, players must create a Battle.net account. While the account creation process was mandatory for PC players, it was optional for players of the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. So, console players will need to link their console account to the Battle.net account through the account settings.

After that, Overwatch players will be able to play with friends from a Battle.net account and their respective platforms. Additionally, if players get a Battle.net account and log into Overwatch by the end of this year, they’ll receive a special “Golden” loot box with a guaranteed Legendary-level in-game item.
