Wordle is an easy to learn and fun online game that has garnered a lot of attention as most of us are again confined to our homes due to the rising cases of omicrons and the drop in temperature. To play Wordle, you need to complete a simple task: guess a secret five-letter word in six attempts. While the rules of the game are simple, what makes it interesting and challenging is that a person can play the game only once in a day. Wordle can only be run through a website and doesn’t require you to download an app and sign in with any kind of credentials. Here’s what you need to know about Wordle:
Word: Meet the manufacturer
The game is developed by Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle. The story behind the development of the game is as interesting as the game itself. Wardle knew his partner Palak Shah that he liked sports, so he created a guessing game for both of them. He named it “Verdal”, playing on his last name. Wardle played it with Shah for a few months and shared it on his family’s WhatsApp group, where it quickly became an obsession.
Wardle first made a prototype of the game in 2013 but his friends were not impressed with his creation so they abandoned the idea. However, in 2020, he and Shah started killing time during the pandemic by playing wordley. Wardle told the New York Times in an interview that limiting the chance to play the game to only once per day “enforced a sense of scarcity.” Wardley said, “It’s something that encourages you to spend three minutes a day. And that’s it. Like, he doesn’t need more of your time than that.”
Wordle: Early Release
The developer released Wordle to the rest of the world in October last year by creating a dedicated website for it. This website is completely free of frills, without any banner or pop-up ads. It doesn’t even ask for subscription amount. This game is not yet available on mobile apps. After just two months, the game saw a meteoric rise as over three million people were playing the game.
Wordle: How to Play
Initially, Wordle appears to be similar to any other word-guessing game. But it gets interesting as you play along. Once you visit the website, you have to guess a secret five-letter word in six tries. As you try each time, the game tells you how close you’re getting. For example, if you guess one of the correct letters of the secret word, it will highlight that letter with a green block, indicating that the letter is also placed in the correct position. If you guess a correct letter but don’t place it correctly, it will be indicated with a yellow block. And finally, if you guess a wrong letter, a gray box indicates that your selected letter is not part of the secret word of the day.
Every time you select a wrong letter, it will also be highlighted. Finally, the correct word will pop up after all your attempts are over.
