San Francisco, United States:
Twitter said on Thursday that it is strengthening the security of high-profile politicians, campaigns and journalists as an “important preventive step” ahead of the US presidential election.
According to social media platforms popular with US President Donald Trump, more sophisticated systems will be implemented on Twitter to detect suspicious activity of hackers and prevent hackers from capturing accounts.
“Implementing these security measures is an important preventive step,” the tech firm’s security team said in a blog post.
Twitter said it “focuses on keeping high-profile accounts safe and secure on Twitter during the 2020 US election.”
Targeted accounts for enhanced security include federal and state politicians; Political parties; Candidate; Presidential campaigns, and the journalists covering them.
Such accounts will require the use of strong passwords, and Twitter will enable a setting that requires confirmation by email or phone number to reset the password.
Twitter also encouraged people to use two-factor authentication to manage accounts that require back-up verification, for example, when a confirmation code sent by text message in logging.
The security team said that it was applying the lessons learned from earlier incidents.
In July, hackers handled dozens of high-profile Twitter accounts with their attacks, with a handful of employees discounting their reputation, according to the company.
The incident by bitcoin scammers stems from a “spear phishing” attack that tricked employees about the origin of the messages, Twitter said.
While that massive hack drove people out of money, it raised concerns that legitimate accounts could be blamed for excusing elections or causing controversy.
Before the US presidential election in November, there is pressure on Twitter and other social media platforms to stop being used to spread misinformation or spread social divisions.
