Bulandshahr worker’s daughter won gold in steeplechase at Khelo India Youth Games
Previously, this record was in the name of Parul Chaudhary from Meerut. Parul set a record in 2012 at the Youth Athletics Championship held in Lucknow with a time of 7:06:49 minutes. Sonam started her career in 2020 with obstacles. He also won the gold medal at the junior championship held in Assam last year. Sonam’s next goal is now the Olympic Games.
I saw boys running I started running with them
Sonam recounted that his father Veersingh worked as a laborer in a brickyard and ran the household. Mother Kashmiri works in other people’s fields. It is very difficult for a family of nine to survive. Sonam has seven siblings. There are five sisters and two brothers among them. Sonam is number three. She says she got the idea to run after seeing boys running to join the army. After that, she also used to run on the road with the boys. This is where his game began.
Had to quit school, practice with a job at a courier company
Sonam recounted that due to financial constraints, she had to drop out of school halfway after Class VIII. After that, she came to Delhi and started practicing. Along with this, to support her own expenses, she started doing delivery work at a courier company. The financial situation was not such that the father would have ensured the supervision. After that, she met coach Sanjeev Kumar and he showed her the way forward. After that, worked hard. I had to run hungry several times, but I kept my aim in front.
Couldn’t read, but could run.
Veersingh recounted that Sonam used to say after watching the video of India’s Flying Angel PT Usha that she couldn’t study due to the economic situation, but she could run. After that, she started running with the kids for army recruitment and won the gold medal. He indicated that no financial assistance has been received from the government or the administration. Now the girl focuses only on sports.
