Ten people were killed and nine others were injured in a fire at a residential building in China’s northwestern Xinjiang region, state media reported on Friday.
The fire broke out in a high-rise building at around 7:50 pm (1150 GMT) on Thursday, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
“Despite emergency treatment, ten people died,” Xinhua news agency reported.
“The injuries suffered by nine other people are not life-threatening,” it said, adding that an investigation into the fire had begun.
Deadly fires are common in China because of weak safety standards and corruption among the officials who enforce them.
This week 38 people were killed and two others were injured in a fire at a factory in the central Chinese city of Anyang.
The authorities blamed “electric welding in which workers violated safety measures”.
