A plane carrying parachutists crashed in central Russia on Sunday, the emergency ministry said, with sixteen people feared dead.

The L-410 plane carrying 23 people crashed around 9:23 a.m. (0623 GMT), the ministry said on its Telegram channel, with the ministry saying on its Telegram channel that seven had been rescued from the wreckage. .

The remaining sixteen are “without signs of life”, a representative of the emergency services told the RIA Novosti news agency.

Images published by the ministry showed the plane broken in half with a badly damaged nose.

The local health ministry said seven survivors were in hospital, one in “very critical” condition, RIA Novosti reported.

According to the Interfax news agency, the plane belonged to the Voluntary Society for Aiding Russia’s Army, Aviation and Navy, which describes itself as a sports and defense organization.

Earlier this year, two L-410 planes were involved in fatal crashes in Russia.
