Cairo:

Two youths were arrested on Thursday for the suicide of a schoolgirl whom they allegedly blackmailed with digitally altered photographs on the internet.

The case of Internet shaming and the loss of a young life has sparked anger on social media in Egypt over the demands of those responsible for being held accountable.

17-year-old Basant Khalid, who lived with her family in a village in northern Egypt, died on 23 December after swallowing poison.

A source in the prosecutor general’s office said she was being blackmailed after she refused to have a relationship with the youths.

The pictures posted widely on social media were noticed by her parents and classmates, the source and Basant’s sister said.

His father, Khalid Chalabi, told local media: “Her face was attached to someone else’s body.” “She’s my daughter, I know her well and she’s not like that.”

In a desperate suicide note to his mother shared with Egyptian media, Basant appealed for her understanding.

The teenager wrote, “Mother, you have to believe me, I am not that girl, the pictures are fake, I do not deserve what is happening to me.”

The prosecutor’s office said the two youths have been detained for four days for questioning “due to extortion and use of social media to cause harm to others and the death of a minor”.

The police have also detained a teacher, who harassed the girl in front of her class.
