5 points on deadly disease

Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke has revealed her struggle with a brain aneurysm, which led to the loss of a “significant part” of a limb.

Here are five points of the deadly disease:

  1. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Center, it is a ballooning resulting from abnormal focal dilation of an artery in the brain that results from a weakening of the inner muscular layer in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain.

  2. This disease is also called brain aneurysm or intracranial aneurysm. The “blister-like” spread can thin and burst without warning.

  3. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Center, it is life-threatening because if a brain aneurysm dilates and the blood vessel wall becomes too thin, it will rupture and bleed into the space around the brain. This phenomenon is called subarachnoid hemorrhage and can lead to a hemorrhagic stroke.

  4. Most brain aneurysms cause no symptoms and are small (less than 10 millimeters) in size. However, sometimes some symptoms include headache (rare, if undiagnosed), eye pain, vision changes, and decreased eye movement.

  5. In May, news reports claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping suffered from a ‘cerebral aneurysm’ and had to be hospitalized in late 2021. Ms Clarke suffered two brain aneurysms in the early years of filming the hit series Game of Thrones. While recovering after the first surgery at the age of 24, she could not even remember her name.
