Colombian officials said Friday that a former Colombian military officer wanted by Haitian authorities in connection with the assassination of President Jovenel Mois has been captured in Jamaica.

Colombian police chief Jorge Vargas said in a video: “We have already been informed about the capture of Mr. Palacios. What is happening now … is the extradition process to Haiti.”

He said he was informed of the arrest by the Interpol office in Kingston, Jamaica.

No details were given about the arrest, nor how Palacios may have managed to reach the neighboring island of Jamaica from Haiti.

Palacios has been the subject of an Interpol red notice.

Three Colombians were killed and 18 more were taken into custody, along with two US citizens of Haitian descent, by the Haitian armed forces that responded to the attack.

Vargas previously said that the captured Colombians claimed that the initial plan was to arrest Moises and hand him over to the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

The mercenaries were contracted by Miami-based Venezuelan security firm CTU.

Colombia’s government has complained of poor treatment of its citizens by the Haitian authorities.

The killing deepened an already dramatic crisis in Haiti, which is plagued by a lack of security, escalating mass violence and kidnappings.
