Entry of Indians banned in Nepal after 4 tourists were found to be Kovid positive

Kathmandu:

Nepal has blocked the entry of people arriving from India after four Indian tourists tested positive for Covid and were deported amid a sharp rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the Himalayan nation.

Four Indian tourists had entered Nepal via Jhulaghat border point in Baitadi district of western Nepal.

Information officer of the health office in Baitadi Bipin Writer said that four Indian nationals tested positive for Covid and were asked to return to India.

“We have also intensified COVID testing on Indians,” Mr. Writer said.

Several Nepalese nationals who returned from India have tested positive for Kovid, he said, adding that the authorities have stopped the entry of Indian tourists into Nepal due to the spike in infections.

Baitadi district is at high risk as it shares border with neighboring India. At present, there are 31 active cases of corona virus in Baitadi where not a single case was reported till three weeks ago.

The number of Covid cases in India rose to 4,41,74,650 after 12,751 new coronavirus infections were reported in a day, according to the data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday.

The death toll rose to 5,26,772 with 42 fatalities, including 10 deaths, the data said.

According to data released by the Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal is currently witnessing a rapid increase in the number of Covid cases with 1,090 new infections being recorded across the country on Tuesday.

This is the highest increase in a single day in the last six months. The day recorded 438 recoveries from the virus and two deaths. There are currently 5,874 active cases of Kovid in Nepal.
