Facebook sees security as a “cost center” in the social network and regulation could be good for the company, whistleblower Frances Haugen told the British parliament on Monday.
Haugen, product manager for Facebook’s civil misinformation team, was appearing before a parliamentary select committee in the UK that is investigating plans to regulate social media companies.
“I think there’s a view inside the company that security is a cost center,” she said. “I think regulation can actually be good for Facebook’s long-term success.”
She said Facebook is “undoubtedly” making the hate worse and added that the company is still the lion of a start-up culture where cutting corners was a good thing.
