Mexico City:

On Friday morning, shots were fired in the area around Terminal 2 of Mexico City’s international airport, wounding at least two people and arresting a suspect, according to the capital’s police chief.

Chief Omar García Harfuch said in a post on Twitter that both wounded were “out of danger”, adding that the suspect in custody had also been shot and wounded.

According to officials, the incident was probably triggered by a robbery attempt in which a bodyguard opened fire on a motorcycle to repel an alleged robber. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect or others also fired weapons.

Images published by outlet Telediario show a black SUV with bullet holes in the windshield and a dismantled motorcycle in front of it, a short distance from the terminal’s normally bustling traffic circle where passengers arrive at the airport and leave.

The National Guard police said the perpetrator of the attempted robbery had chased the SUV from a nearby metro station.

According to the airport’s media office, operations at Mexico’s largest airport have not been affected.
