Nairobi/London:

Ali Harbi Ali, son of a former media advisor to a former Prime Minister of Somalia, has been arrested by British police under anti-terrorism laws.

Ames, 69, of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party, was repeatedly stabbed as he met with constituency voters on Friday at a church in Lay-on-Sea, east of London.

The killing came five years after the assassination of Joe Cox, a legislator from the opposition Labor Party, and prompted a review of politicians’ security.

Police said they had arrested a 25-year-old British man at the scene on suspicion of murder and said he was believed to have acted alone. They have not named the suspect, but have used additional powers under anti-terrorism laws to detain him till October 22.

A British source close to the investigation named Ali Herbie Ali, a British national, as the suspect in custody.

Ali Herbie Ali’s father Herbie Ali Kulne told The Sunday Times that his son had been arrested in connection with the murder.

When asked about this, Herbie Ali Kulne, former adviser to former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, said, “At this particular moment we are passing through (a) unprecedented and appalling situation.”

“Due to the ongoing preliminary investigation, I am obliged and ordered not to speak about it,” said Herbie Ali Kulne, former director of the Somali government’s Department of Media and Communications.

Reuters correspondents said British police were searching an address linked to Ali Herbie Ali in north London on Sunday.

Home Minister Priti Patel said on Sunday that Britain was looking at several options to increase the security of MPs.
