Gay marriage would be possible for Dutch Royal House: Prime Minister Mark Rutte

Amsterdam:

Prime Minister Mark Root said on Tuesday that the Dutch Crown Princess can marry a person of any gender without losing her right to the throne.

Crown Princess Katharina-Amalia, 17, is the heiress of King Willem-Alexander.

Rutte was answering questions from Parliament that arose from a recent book “Amalia, Calls of Duty”.

It argued that the old laws would seem to exclude the possibility of a same-sex couple on the throne. However, same-sex marriage has been legal in the Netherlands since 2001.

“The government believes that the heir can also marry a person of the same sex,” Root wrote in his response to parliament.

“Therefore the cabinet does not see that the heir to the throne or the king should abdicate if he wishes to marry a partner of the same sex.”

Royal marriages require Parliament’s approval, however, and members of the royal household give up their place in the line of succession, either to marry someone without permission or because they were unlikely to receive it. .
