Politicians set to become Japan’s next prime minister may not be so knowledgeable on social media – but a photo of their favorite food after being elected to lead the country’s ruling party struck a chord with Twitter users overnight took.
While Fumio Kishida’s first post as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party received more than 30,000 likes, a photo of his dinner on Wednesday got four times more clicks.
“When I got home, my wife Yuko made me” okonomiyaki‘Cause I said I love the dish she makes for me on Instagram Live,” Kishida tweeted. “It’s always super delicious, but today it was so delicious I won’t forget it for the rest of my life. Thank you.”

For those who are not familiar okonomiyakiIt is a savory pancake filled with cabbage that is cooked on a griddle, with various additions such as meat and fish, and topped with a sauce. The variety of the dish is a regional specialty in Osaka and is considered a soul food for Hiroshima, the constituency of Kishida.
With nearly 180,000 followers, he is not a prominent voice among politicians on Twitter. That’s a long way behind Taro Kono’s 2.4 million followers, who beat Twitter and Instagram users to reach the top position.
Kishida has to tread carefully as she learns to operate the social media platform. An Instagram photo of his wife cooking him dinner during last year’s LDP leadership election, when he was defeated by outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, drew a backlash for coming across as sexist.
