The United States is confident that Germany will not open the Nord Stream 2 pipeline with Russia if Moscow invades Ukraine, a top US official said on Thursday.

“If Russia attacks Ukraine, Nord Stream 2 will not proceed,” State Department number three official Victoria Nuland told reporters.

Asked why the United States was confident, he said the pipeline has still not been tested or certified by German regulators.

“We will work with Germany to ensure that the pipeline does not go ahead,” Nuland said.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Barbock told parliament on Thursday that her government was working with Western allies on a strong package of sanctions “including Nord Stream 2” if Russia invades Ukraine.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke about the crisis in a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Washington time late Wednesday.
