Lahore:

Police said a man in Pakistan is suspected of killing his two daughters and four of his children by setting fire to the house because a woman had married against his will.

Police officer Abdul Majeed told Reuters over the phone that Manzoor Hussain is being hunted down by police after he allegedly set a house on fire in a village in central Pakistan’s Muzaffargarh district, shared by Fauzia Bibi and Khurshid Mai .

Khurshid Mai’s husband also died in the fire, the official said.

Fauzia Bibi had married Mehboob Ahmed about 18 months ago against her father’s wishes in a so-called love marriage, as opposed to an arranged marriage, according to the official.

Majeed said, “The incident is the result of a rivalry between the two families over love marriage.”

He said the father being traced, Hussain, lives in a nearby village.

According to his statement to the authorities, Fauzia Bibi’s husband Mehboob Ahmed told the police that he was not at home when the fire broke out and that the house was on fire when he returned from work in the morning.

Mehboob Ahmed said that his four-month-old son along with Khurshid Mai’s three children aged two, six and 13 years died.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, every year hundreds of women in Pakistan are killed by their relatives for marrying without consent or against the wishes of their families.
