13 workers killed in flooded highway tunnel in China’s Guangdong province

Rescuers are seen at the entrance of the flood-ravaged Shijingshan Tunnel.

Shanghai, China:

State media reported late Wednesday that rescue teams had found the bodies of 10 more workers trapped in a flooded highway tunnel last week in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, raising the death toll to 13.

China Central Television reported that rescue workers were unable to establish contact with the remaining worker trapped in the tunnel. Rescue work continues.

On July 15, water suddenly leaked into the Shijingshan tunnel under a reservoir, leaving 14 workers trapped more than a kilometer away from the entrance.

This was the second accident in the tunnel since March, when two workers were killed when a wall collapsed.

The tunnel is part of a major expressway in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, that connects the coastal city with bridges to neighboring Macau and Hong Kong.
